Connecting Our Mentoring Networks with Promising Youth Around the World

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the first online edition of the Maybach Family Foundation Newsletter. This year the Maybach Family Foundation launched its first science and research mentoring project in Africa and brought its global mentoring program to the world at the Cannes Film Festival and the Milken Institute’s Global Conference in California. Wherever we go, I am impressed continually by all of you who want to assist our mentoring program and seek to become a mentor. We know this one-on-one relationship can change entire lives and provide hope and future for individuals and their families.

After reading our newsletter, I hope you will be more inspired to join the MFF mentoring network or donor club to help transform the future of young people around the world.

In 2008 stay tuned for signature MFF events and the launch of our newest mentoring project.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year! If you have any questions or are interested in an upcoming event, please feel free to email us at contact@maybach.org.

Sincerely,

Uli Maybach

EXCELLENCE IN MENTORING LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Going Where There is Need: HIV/AIDS Research in Ugandachildren

In June 2007, I traveled with Maybach mentor Dr. David Bangsberg to the city of Mbararain southwestern Uganda.Dr. Bangsberg is an infectious disease epidemiologist and associate professor of medicine at the University of San Francisco. He is widely known for his groundbreaking research on HIV/AIDS treatment in Africa and is already helping to provide lifesaving antiviral treatments to Ugandans. Until recently, thirty percent of the population in Uganda was HIV positive. That number has dropped to seven percent, a major achievement largely thanks to their community approach. However, Uganda is suffering from a brain drain of highly trained doctors and medical personnel.

MAKING INROADS IN EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES

MFF Los Angeles Office Opening

On September 25th, more than 200 people gathered in the impressive Sunset Ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles to celebrate the Maybach Family Foundation’s LA office opening.

One of the main highlights of the evening was a thrilling piano recital from Ron Altbach, former producer of the Beach Boys. There was also a silent auction of signature items from the Maybach Brand and even wine from the German Prime Minister of State to raise funds for the foundation. Many patrons came forward to offer their help, including an in-kind donation of media software to advance the communications work of the Maybach Family Foundation.

We thank Stan Bharti, CEO of Forbes & Manhattan, Inc., for underwriting the evening, the partners at Holme Roberts & Owen LLP for generously donating office space to the Maybach Family Foundation.

There are certainly many causes one can and should support in life. However, none is more important, in my view, than mentoring.” – Stan Bharti, President & CEO, Forbes & Manhattan, Inc.

“It is clear that the dedication and promise of a brighter day for the Foundation's beneficiaries is a deep commitment and it is refreshing to see such support from people like Stan Bharti and Uli for those in need.” – Ruth McCartney, CEO, McCartney.com

“HRO is delighted to host the Maybach Family Foundation in our Los Angeles offices. We value mentoring relationships and support the Foundation’s goals to bring these opportunities to young people around the world.” – John Shiner, Managing Partner, Holme Roberts & Owen LLP

Growth of the European Network

In the fall Ulrich Schmid-Maybach and Corinna Basler traveled throughout Europe from Germany to the United Kingdom raising awareness for the foundation. They made presentations and hosted various workshops, speaking to key audiences, ranging from prominent business people to philanthropists.  The awareness of the foundation has grown tremendously from their European tour, resulting in an increase of European philanthropists and business people to our network of supporters.

The Maybach Family Foundation made a splash at the Bad Griesbach “Networking Trophy Golf Event” in September.  The MFF reached out to the distinguished guests in attendance, including tennis superstar Boris Becker and business tycoon Mr. Hans-Dieter Cleven, who created the Cleven Becker Foundation to raise awareness about the trend towards obesity and promote physical education among Swiss youth. Boris Becker, a six-time Grand Slam singles champion, Olympic gold medalist and the youngest-ever winner of the men's singles title at Wimbledon at the age of 17, and Cleven both embody excellence in their respective fields. They understood that the drive for excellence is a living tradition of the Maybach family and brand. By the end of the event, the Cleven’s foundation gave a generous donation of $20,000 and took a genuine interest in our unique mentoring program.

MFF president Schmid-Maybach presided over a Maybach sponsored polo cup at Ascot Park outside of London and even played on the brand team with Prince Rashid of Jordon. During the presentation from the foundation, many people heard about Gottlieb Daimler’s special mentoring relationship with orphan Wilhelm Maybach for the very first time. Guests were surprised to learn about Maybach’s humble beginnings and that his life inspired the Foundation’s mission integrating corporate social responsibility, family philanthropy and social innovation through an authentic mentoring program.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Advisory Board Members

The Maybach Family Foundation has the privilege to announce two special members of its advisory board: Quincy Jones and Paulo Coelho. Our advisory board members represent a variety of sectors, hold diverse expertise, and are experienced mentors, social entrepreneurs and philanthropists.  In this capacity, they advise the Foundation on protégé selection, projects and mentors for the Excellence in Mentoring Leadership Program.  Members of the advisory board have already assisted in the selection of the Ugandan candidates by reviewing their profiles and providing feedback.

PROFILE: PAULO COELHO

Paulo Coelho was introduced to the Maybach Family Foundation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.  He has since become a respected advisor to the foundation as philanthropist and one of the most influential authors of our time.

For 15 years Paulo Coelho's novels have made the top place on the bestseller lists around the world. According to Reuters (Oct 8, 2003), Paulo Coelho ranks among the world's three most successful writers. The critics have praised his poetic, realistic and philosophical style, as well as the symbolic language that does not speak to our minds, but to our hearts. “His books have had a life-enhancing impact on millions of people," wrote The Times in the UK.

In 1986 Paulo Coelho walked along the Road to Santiago, a medieval pilgrim's route between France and Spain. He would later describe this experience in The Pilgrimage, published in 1987. The following year, his second book, The Alchemist, established his worldwide fame. The book has already achieved the status of a universally admired modern classic. This story, considered to be timeless by many, is set to enchant and inspire whole generations of future readers. Among his recent novels are Eleven Minutes, a bestselling fiction title worldwide in 2003; The Zahir (2005); Like the Flowing River (2006); and The Witch of Portobello (2006).

In addition to being a world-renowned author and the recipient of numerous international awards, Paulo Coelho and his wife, Christina Oiticica, are the founders of the Paulo Coelho Institute. The Paulo Coelho Institute provides support and opportunities for underprivileged members of Brazilian society, especially children and the elderly.  The Institutes currently supports more than 400 children in the Pavão-Pavãozinho favela of Rio de Janeiro.

Paulo Coelho is a member of the Maybach Family Foundation's Advisory Board, the Board of the Shimon Perez Institute for Peace, and the Board of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. He also is a UNESCO special counselor, a United Nations Messenger for Peace, and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
